Brendan Buckley: It has been another week on the rock, and another update. In between the stubborn winds and the erratic weather, there were a few fun waves to be had. Even with the disappointing conditions, it's hard not to surf a few times a day when you live right across the street from the beach. We were supposed to get a ten foot swell earlier in the week, but it only ended up being about half that. Although a let down, it still leads to a few waves on the head across the street at sunset. We have a special guest staying with us this week. We treated him the only way we know how... with a Julius Caesar-Esque haircut and a never ending stack of dishes. We got a few more Go Pro video clips, so here is another frame grab. The forecasts are calling for a bigger swell early next week, and the winds are possibly going to start to settle down, so things are looking up!
Brendan Buckley: I have just moved into a new place, directly across the street from Sunset. March is known to be pretty windy out here, and this has proved to be true thus far. Lots of wind = less crowds = more waves for me. I've got everything from a 5 11 to a 9 0, and the pacific doesn't seem to want to stop sending big angry north west swells our way, so It should be a pretty interesting month. I'll keep you guys up to date with a weekly recap. Here is a frame grab from a Go Pro clip, a picture of my mullet, and the view from the front lawn!
Here are some snapshots:
Josh Wilson: Well we have had some fun waves for the last two days. Good sandbars in ocean city right now for sure. Got to love beach restoration when it actually does something worth while, other than get swept out to sea. I actually feel that my tax dollars went somewhere. They might not save a house with the restoration but they have made for a lot of the boys getting some sick tube time. Josh Wilson: With waiting anticipation it has started. The Quiksilver snapper rocks pro presented by Land Rover kicked off. The top 44 guys in the world hit the water and there was amazing surfing to be seen. World champ Mick Fanning was looking true to form with huge Power turns and looking amazing. The return of Andy Irons was not a dream first heat for A.I. finishing last in his first heat. Conditions were more like a paddle marathon, with super strong currents making it very difficult for the guys to line up in position.

Josh Wilson: With O'neill pulling out of this year’s asp 4star was at Sebastian Inlet it left contest director Mitch Varnes to look at other options. With major local sponsorship Mitch has come up with the Masters of Surfing Proteins event will also be held at Sebastian Inlet on March 6-14.
This event will feature one of the largest purses out there for a Jr. Pro at $20,000 for the 20 and under guys to battle it out for. You will see guys from all over the U.S. Hawaii, and probably as far as Australia to take there shots at the purse.
There’s also one of two stops for the woman in the US at a $5,000 purse at this event.
And a new concept for the Masters of surfing is the 40 and older pro. This event will have a $12,000 purse which is awesome for these guys. You will see guys like Matt Kechele, Bill Hartley, and Rich Roudolph, just to name a few compete in this event.
Masters of Surfing Pro, check it out. March 6-14
Josh Wilson: With a much needed swell after two weeks of much needed swell we finally got what we had been waiting for. The jersey state was firing from Long Branch to North Wildwood. The new beach restoration has been a really good thing for the surfers and the sandbars it’s been producing. The tubes have been square and the boys have been stoked. We have been blessed the last two days with fun surf. Hope everyone got a few themselves. Josh Wilson: Our very own Sam Duggan is the surfer of the week for NSSA. Congratulations !!!
Josh Wilson: The golden gloves have been postponed until sat the 13th of March. The Dean Randazzo freeze for a cause is not this Saturday but next. Come out and support a great benefit at casino pier. Both these events are going to be super fun, cold water, hopefully great surf and you will see some exciting action. Josh Wilson: Well its almost time for the Golden Gloves in Ocean City NJ. The Golden Glove is the brain child of Dennis Weiler who is the Rep of ERGO clothing, Creatures of Leisure, Hoven Sunglasses, and 21-13 surfboards but also is the chapter director of the Christian surfing federation in the area. This year is going be the biggest yet with there being some money in the open division, as well as some of the others. The contest will be in freezing water and probably freezing air temps. Bragging rights, a little cash, and some great times are in store for the contest. Check out the upcoming footage from the contest on here as well as easternsurf.com. Josh Wilson: I am following up the topic of FCS fins on Wednesday. The big thing to remember when purchasing fins is to not buy what your buddies are riding and to get what is designed to best suit your needs. If you are a grom under 100 pounds they make a fin for you, If you are in the 115-155 pound range, I recommend checking out some of the pc3 or in that range. Big guys are up in 7 ranges or a fin that is similar. Remember to be realistic on the surf your going be riding most often. If the surf gets big, step up the fin size a bit, or get a wider template. The choices are pretty wide. Do your research. Read up on the fins that you like and if you have any questions. Hit me up. REMEMBER DONT GO OUT AND BUY A FIN JUST BECAUSE YOUR BUDDY HAS IT, BUY THE RIGHT FINS FOR YOU!!!!! Josh Wilson: Well growing up I never had the chance to be offered different style fins for my height, weight, waves, etc. Today with FCS you have so many options that you can go with which makes such a difference. It really gives you the opportunity to try different setups, and feel how the board rides. It can be a huge advantage. Plus it makes great for travel. Yes if you are on the WCT and you know exactly what fin u ride, the conditions to the t hat the board is shaped for, glass on r sick, but for the rest of the world, it makes a board multi useful, in different conditions. Just by a few turns of an Allen key. I love to composite fins they make, and the honeycomb. Josh Wilson: NSSA waited until Sunday to run event number #7 in chest to head high surf. A fun sized north swell generated some peaky wedge's for competitors. Luke dominated the Open Boys and Explorer Menehune division all day and posted a 16.5 total wave score to win boys and a 15.00 total to win Explorer Menehune. Win these two NSSA wins Luke is the 2009-2010 season champion for Open Boys and Explorer Menehune.
Josh Wilson: 12th Street, Trestles and Rambler are some of our favorite surf breaks in Wildwood. Thank you for your question...

Joanne asked: Whats your favorite surf breaks around Wildwood?
Josh Wilson: We have waves in the waist high with a few bigger sets today, looking for a little bump to hit us over the weekend. Snow is starting to melt and making a bloody mess of it here in south jersey.
Guess what, were out there, hope to see you in the water.
Josh Wilson: This winter has officially become the snowiest winter ever. Some people travel to warm spots in the winter, some go snowboarding, and some stick it out. This winter has had some great swell in between the northwest winds for weeks, and the snow storms from hell. But when we have got some breaks in weather, we have had some jewels.
Water temp, 36-36, what are we wearing; I’m currently wearing a 5/4/3 with attached hood, 6mm gloves, and 7mm boots. Come get some snowy tubes, and lets all pray for some good swell to come.
Josh Wilson: We have had a nuts last 24 hrs, with some serious snow fall and nuts winds it’s made for an interesting day. Well boys and girls this could all change for the am, with big swell readings and out of control surf today, could be just shaping us up for some prime time snowy tubes today.
Get your thickest suit and gloves and get ready for ice cream headaches, but it could all be worth the sacrifice today. Don’t blame it on having to dig yourself out, or the girl wants to spend the day with you, and oh yea the super bowl doesn't start till later. GET OUT THERE !! Josh Wilson: This is a question I’m often asked. Its pretty simple, kids start skiing at 3, they play organized soccer at 5, tee ball at 4 or 5, and pee wee football. So my answer is when you want to get them in the water. Swimming lessons can be started very early, and in reality they can be in the water at 3 on a board.
It’s like any sport the earlier they start the more comfortable they become in the water and develop a little passion. The more time they spend in the water at a young age you will see they progress pretty fast. I personally started at the age of 3 with my dad has helps and continues to push me on a soft board in the inside waves. These are some of the best memories to date.
In the end surfing is a sport you can take up at any time and have the time of your life, the bottom line is the earlier you can start, the more years of memories you will have. Get the kids out there in the water and let them have some fun, and yes girl are just as capable as the boys.

Noah Dovin says: Thank you Kona for being so supportive of us and thank you Josh for being an awesome Coach and Team Manager! ...see you guys in the water!
Josh Wilson: Some people might argue wax is better and others will never even paddle out with a new board without a tailpad.I happen to be one of those guys who wont paddle out without one. It really is all in a matter of taste but heres a few reasons why i like. With having a foot that has a naturally high arch the pads with an arch bar certainly mold to my foot better.I find when i push on my tail number one its not going any where,it gives me a great guidance to where my back foot is on my board. The reason this helps is for going into different turns i can set my foot up either more forward,or slide it all the way back to the tail block and lay into it.
I have found that with just wax i'm all over the back of the tail just kinda lost with my foot placement.I slip alot more for sure, and i really beat the crap outta my board to which is a definate down fall on the resale as well.
Some great pads to check out are the new creatures of leasure pads, they have sick colors, super grippy, and very light. Dakine has some nice pads as well, the Andy Irons and Bruce Irons pads are both nice. I have been personally rocking the creatures pads as of late. Josh Wilson said:
With the volcom 5 star wqs event coming to a close a few days ago i think the East Coasters might have turned a few heads.Withthis being volcom's first asp event that it has sponsored it couldnt have been better. At Pipe big surf, and the world watching. The stage was set.East coasters are not known for there big wave skilss and often looked at as playing 2nd fidle to the rest of the world. With our usally unfovorable conditions its easy to make the usumption that east coast surfers dont charge.Well that was proven wrong once again by Travis Beckman,Nills Switszer, and the GOLDEN BOY of the comp Brett Barly from the outer banks north carolina.
The boys proved that just because your from the east coast dont think we dont charge.Brett posted a 10.00 and a 9.87 in one of his rounds,Nills took a hell drop and stood tall on the biggest day scoring in the 8 range as well.So for those who doubt the skills, check it out or just keep doubting the boys from the east. Josh Wilson: With a lot of the pros trying new board shapes, styles, lengths and thickness it makes me take a closer look. You see guys like Kelly and Dane riding 5'4 5'5 stubby little boards out there in good size surf doing amazing things. The thing is these guys can ride anything and make it look good.
Definitely in smaller waves it’s always good to have a little more thickness or a little wider to give you that extra edge. Now we are talking about for guys who are surfing contests. What I have found is that even when it’s small you can’t put the fish type board in the exact spot that you can on say a modified short board. Here is that missing link. So for me I will stick to just a bit modified short board for the grovel days, low entry rocker, single concave, just a small kick in the tail. This seems to work best for me. Don’t get me wrong the other boards are fun, but I feel I can execute a lot more precise on what I have mentioned. But I am not a shaper; this is just what works for me. Visit the Surf Shop to get the right board for you. Kona asks Josh Wilson: What do you like most about managing the surf team?
Josh Wilson: I have a passion for coaching the up and coming groms around here, helping them develop there own style and to help bring out there best for contests.I also enjoy teaching people to surf and getting them amped on the sport..Look forward to seeing you in the water.
